company history
Salamanda Tandem is directed by dancer and musician Isabel Jones.
Founded in 1989, the company
has its roots in the explorations of touch-based movement that Jones conducted
during the early '80s with blind, visually impaired and sighted people and her
body and voice work with children with autism. Based on collaboration
and improvisation, Jones' approach was the inspiration for a company that
evolved into an ensemble of professional artists committed to working
with all kinds of people who have limited access to the arts. Primarily
those with disabilities, these people came to include many others such
as prisoners, children in secure units, hospital patients, carers and
elderly people. Since 1994 Salamanda Tandem has been one of Arts Council
England (East Midlands) Board's strategically funded clients. In 2000
it became a limited company and in 2001 was awarded charitable status.
